Thank you also to past Commodore Bill Canfield for returning as Regatta Director. He and his team of Lyn Reid, handling registrations, and Oriel Blake, organizing volunteers, pulled off a super regatta.
A special thank you this year to our long term Race Officers Dick Neville and Dave Brennan. They volunteered their services this year and we are very appreciative.
I would like to personally thank Morgan Avery for his efforts restoring Three Blasts to nearly Bristol condition in time for the regatta. Morgan also repaired the awning boom and installed the temporary mast. As a result we now have full shade on the upper deck.
Antilles sailors met at the Ike Geiger Team Race Trophy hosted by MIT University in Boston. Contested in modified FJ’s the event featured Winter conditions. It was sunny but very cold wind. Day one saw windy NW winds which led many boats to capsize or swamp. Sam Morrell led Boston University to the day one lead with their only loss to a Boston College team featuring Colin Brego. On day two in below freezing conditions though in less wind Sam and his Boston University team held on to win. They took another loss but emerged the winners from a three way tie. Brego and Boston College were 4th while Amanda Engemen and the University of Vermont took 7th. Danny Petrovic was at the event with the Roger William’s team. Note the piles of snow in the background!

“This year’s Viya VI Open will be a more local event than it has been in the past and will include a weekend junior tournament as well,” explains tournament organizer and STYC pro, Chris Lorenz. “We hope to attract players from all over the Virgin Islands and nearby parts of the Caribbean. We have expanded the Open categories to include Men's and Women's singles and doubles events from NTRP 4.0 and above. The theme of this year’s tournament will be about resilience and recovery and about moving forward despite obstacles and difficulties brought about by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.”
Players can compete in a total of 18 divisions. There are four Open Divisions for men’s and women’s singles and doubles. In the B Divisions, there are men’s and women’s singles (NTRP rating 3.5 and under), men’s and women’s doubles, mixed doubles and Men’s Doubles (for players age 55-plus years). Play will be best of three sets for all divisions. In the junior division, there will be four age-grouped divisions: age 16 and under, age 14 and under, age 12 and under, and age 10 and under, with separate divisions for boys and girls. Draw will be closed at 16 for doubles and 32 for singles so sign up soon!
Over $5,000 will be awarded in cash prizes, plus trophies, in Open and B Divisions. Open singles winners will receive $500, Open Doubles winners will each receive $300 and Mixed Doubles winners will each receive $200. The entry fee is $50 per person (pp) for singles and $80 per doubles team in the Open divisions. In the B Divisions, entry is $40 pp for singles, $60 per doubles team. Junior entry is $25 pp. Fee includes an event-logo microfiber performance shirt and a welcome buffet dinner at the STYC, with special entertainment.

Matches will take place on courts at the STYC, the host location for Semi-Finals and Finals play, as well as at the Anchorage Condominiums. The public is invited to come out and watch the action.
Unfortunately due to hurricane damage many of the hotels are still closed and housing is difficult to obtain and can not be provided by STYC.
